ABOUT US

Following the municipality of Hjoerring’s adoption of Energy Plan 2.0, an innovative new business initiative has been launched in the Port of Hirtshals.

A new development company – Greenport North – has been established to catalyse green transition and sustainable growth for both new and existing companies in the port.

Based in North Sea Science Park and working closely with the Port of Hirtshals, Greenport North works to further green transition within the areas of energy, transport and industry.

Innovation and knowledge sharing is in our DNA. With the Port of Hirtshals as a platform for demonstration, we will initiate conversations with ports, companies and networks around the Kattegat, Skagerrak and the North Sea.

GREAT, GREEN PERSPECTIVES

The Port of Hirtshals is planning an expansion budgeted at around 1 billion DKR, which opens a window of opportunity for a new and innovative approach to green port development and operation.

In the summer of 2021, the Port of Hirtshals was upgraded on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which will lead to a rise in transport activity and an increase in external infrastructure investments in both the port and the road network leading to it.

The geographical location of the port, the existing infrastructure and the expansion plans enable the Port of Hirtshals to move into a new league and realistically aim to become the greenest traffic port in Europe with regards to freight, transport and logistics solutions.

GREEN ENERGY FOR BLUE BUSINESS

The ambition behind the Greenport North initiative is to create a unique commercial growth centre for Scandinavian maritime and port related businesses in the Port of Hirtshals.

The Greenport North initiative will initiate a conversion process, which will attract new green businesses and investments to the Port of Hirtshals while the framework conditions are optimised for existing production and transport companies.

The green investment goals will be achieved through a targeted effort to create strong value propositions for businesses and facilitation of commercial collaborations in the areas of industrial symbiosis and green business development.

Methods, models and technologies for the energy systems of the future developed in Hirtshals can be used in ports worldwide.

UN GLOBAL GOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Greenport North works with reference to the UN global development goals.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all 193 United Nations Member States in 2015. The 17 goals provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.

GREENPORT NORTH’S INNOVATION MODEL

Our innovation model is open – all stakeholders can get involved in designing and developing the new value chains of the green transition and the circular economy, which we must adopt in the coming years.

We will identify key areas of development to create green framework conditions. We will initiate innovation groups and start accumulating knowledge and developing business models for commercial activities.

We will share the knowledge we generate as a community through the efforts of the individual partners. The Greenport North innovation platform will provide the framework for collaboration and the sharing of knowledge in seminars, innovation camps, challenges and virtual workshops.
