SKAGERRAK HYDROGEN BACKBONE LAUNCHES – SHAPING THE FUTURE OF HYDROGEN INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS DENMARK, NORWAY AND SWEDEN

A connected Scandinavian hydrogen infrastructure, with links to Germany, will open up new opportunities for industrial development—both on its own and in synergy with future CO₂ infrastructure. At a conference held in Hirtshals on Thursday, March 27, more than 50 participants from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden gathered to explore the path from vision to realization.

The conference was organized by Greenport North and Business Region North Denmark and took place under the auspices of the “Green Jutland Corridor” project, funded by the EU’s Interreg ØKS programme. Participants included representatives from Hydrogen Denmark, Energinet, Gas Storage Denmark, Vätgas Sverige, Nordion Energi, Chalmers University of Technology, Business Region Kristiansand, as well as local and regional stakeholders from across the three countries.

Hydrogen—together with other renewable energy sources—is a key component in Europe’s transition toward climate neutrality by 2050. The visionary Skagerrak Hydrogen Backbone concept builds on Energinet’s plans to establish a hydrogen backbone across Jutland.

The aim of the Skagerrak Hydrogen Backbone is to connect Southern Norway and Western Sweden with a future hydrogen storage facility in Lille Torup, Denmark, forming a continuous infrastructure from Scandinavia to Germany. This will not only enable hydrogen exports from Scandinavia to Germany, but also create new opportunities for sustainable industrial development across the region.

At the same time, the Skagerrak Hydrogen Backbone will help support the development of a cohesive Danish hydrogen infrastructure, with a central storage hub in Lille Torup, just north of Viborg.

– To secure Europe’s future competitiveness, energy security, and the foundation of the green transition, close and stable collaboration in energy production and distribution is more important than ever,” says Steen Hintze, CEO of Greenport North. He continues:

– In a world where we must free ourselves from oil and gas, a cross-border hydrogen infrastructure between the Scandinavian countries is essential. The conference clearly showed strong support for intensified collaboration between Southern Norway, Western Sweden, and Northern Denmark to establish a hydrogen corridor that can drive sustainable business development and help realize the green transition.
