Green Jutland Corridor – Efficient and environmentally friendly multimodel transport

Green Jutland Corridor is a collaborative initiative between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, focused on creating a greener, more integrated, and future-ready transport corridor through Jutland.

The project explores how to best combine various modes of transport such as rail, road, and sea to reduce CO₂ emissions while making more efficient use of infrastructure including roads, railways, and ports. Linking Southern Norway and Western Sweden with Jutland, and extending onward through Germany to Central Europe, the corridor represents one of Scandinavia’s most vital transport routes.

THE CHALLENGE

Transport activity in the Jutland Corridor continues to grow year by year, both in freight and passenger volumes. This increasing demand puts significant pressure on infrastructure and contributes to rising greenhouse gas emissions. Freight transport by truck and ferry in particular poses a major climate challenge unless supported by greener alternatives.

Moreover, the corridor involves a wide range of stakeholders from ports and rail operators to transport companies and public authorities, making coordination and alignment a complex task.

Building a coherent and sustainable transport corridor calls for shared solutions, cross-border collaboration, and targeted investments in both technology and infrastructure.

THE SOLUTION

The Green Jutland Corridor brings together partners from across the region to develop concrete, practical solutions that support greener, more efficient transport.

Key focus areas include:

  • Promoting green fuels such as hydrogen and electricity for both land and sea transport
  • Improving modal transitions, for example where goods shift between ship, truck, and train
  • Optimizing capacity by coordinating passenger and freight traffic and enabling smarter planning
  • Identifying bottlenecks, such as gaps in the rail network or limitations at port facilities
  • Enhancing cross-border collaboration among stakeholders in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark to ensure aligned, workable solutions
  • Generating knowledge and models that can inspire and inform other transport corridors across Europe

IMPACT
The project will make it easier and more environmentally friendly to transport goods and people through Jutland and further into Europe. A greener, more efficient corridor benefits both the climate and the economy by making transport more sustainable, resilient, and less prone to congestion. At the same time, it will enhance the attractiveness of the regions involved, improving conditions for businesses, residents, and travelers alike.

In the long term, the insights and solutions developed can serve as a model for other European transport corridors facing similar challenges related to climate, growth, and mobility.
