CONVEY - A hydrogen ecosystem model in Port of Hirtshals

CONVEY is working to build a green and circular hydrogen ecosystem at the Port of Hirtshals. Powered by local renewable energy, the goal is to produce green hydrogen for use in heavy transport and industry.

The project focuses on integrating the entire value chain from local hydrogen production and distribution to the utilization of by-products such as heat and oxygen. The hydrogen will replace fossil fuels in trucks and industrial processes, while surplus resources will be repurposed to meet other local needs – oxygen for fish farming, and heat for industry and district heating.

This holistic approach makes CONVEY a pioneering project in how green technology can be designed to be circular and locally rooted from the outset.

THE CHALLENGE
While hydrogen production from renewable energy has been done before, CONVEY is the first project to explore the possibilities of a fully integrated hydrogen ecosystem in a port context. This involves challenges such as balancing energy supply from wind turbines with hydrogen demand in transport and industry. It also requires coordination between multiple stakeholders, advanced digital control systems, and new methods for managing and utilizing by-products.

the solution
The CONVEY project is developing an integrated infrastructure for green hydrogen, which includes:

  • Production of hydrogen through electrolysis powered by local renewable energy
  • Refueling facilities for road transport such as hydrogen trucks
  • Hydrogen supply to phase out fossil fuels in local businesses
  • Local utilization of oxygen and heat from the electrolysis process, for instance in fish farming and district heating
  • Development of digital tools and a scalable model that other ports and communities can replicate

The project brings together stakeholders from business, technology, and green energy to ensure a robust and practical solution that works in practice, not just in theory.

INPACT

CONVEY will contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions from both industry and transport. The project generates new jobs, strengthens local value creation, and positions Hirtshals as a leading hub for the green hydrogen transition in Europe. The experiences gained from the project will pave the way for establishing similar hydrogen ecosystems in ports and industrial parks across Denmark and Europe.
