€2.3 MILLION FOR CLIMATE-FRIENDLY AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT CO2 HANDLING IN HIRTHALS
Together with a group of partners, Port of Hirtshals and Greenport North have secured a grant of €2.3 million in funding from the Just Transition Fund for a project aiming to pave the way for future CCUS infrastructure and strengthen Denmark’s green transition.
Together with a group of partners, Port of Hirtshals and Greenport North have secured a grant of €17.5 million in funding from the Just Transition Fund for a project aiming to pave the way for future CCUS infrastructure and strengthen Denmark’s green transition.
The objective is to develop solutions that support the establishment of a CO₂ terminal in Port of Hirtshals where CO₂ from industrial emitters can be collected and transported for permanent underground storage, removing CO₂ from the atmosphere rather than allowing it to contribute to climate change.
Building on the extensive work already undertaken, the project will develop models and solutions to support the establishment of a future CO₂ terminal in Port of Hirtshals.
Key priorities include:
- Minimizing the CO₂ footprint of CO₂ handling
- Ensuring cost-efficiency for participating businesses
- Integrating renewable energy and repurposing surplus energy
- Establishing a solid knowledge base, including the development of an LCA model for climate impact assessment
The partnership will focus on identifying energy-efficient solutions that embed CO₂ handling within an integrated energy system, leveraging renewable energy and surplus heat. This approach will help to minimize both energy consumption and climate impact.
An integrated energy system will also deliver benefits to other businesses in Hirtshals, as the reuse of energy flows will help reduce their CO₂ footprint and operational costs.
As part of the € 2.3 million grant, approx. €134.000 is earmarked to support 10 local businesses that can participate in the energy symbiosis or in various stages of the CO₂ capture, transport, and storage process.
The project is closely aligned with the expansion of Hirtshals Port and will further strengthen the port’s role as a central hub in future green industrial value chains.
The partners behind the Greenport Scandinavia CIRCLE CO₂ Hub initiative are Greenport North, Port of Hirtshals, Aalborg University, Maripure, EMD, 2-0 LCA, PlanEnergi, Complete Solutions, and Energy Cluster Denmark.
Greenport Scandinavia CIRCLE CO₂ Hub is co-financed by the EU.
